Five Factors You Need to Know About Before Buying Silk Sheets

It was reported only a couple days ago that luxury beddng is seeing a really big rise in demand. Apparently, one reason that many people are buying luxury bedding is because when they travel to nice hotels, they get to sleep in great bedding. There is no going back to regular sheets once you lay down in some luxury bedding. When it comes to luxury bedding one of the best is silk and you need to know how to buy it.

1. Know the weight of your silk. If you have heard of thread count then you can just toss that aside. Silk bed sheets get measured in what’s called momme weight. It’s an actual measurement of the thickness of the sheet. The thicker the sheet the better and you will want to get 19 momme silk sheets.

2. The type of silk available. There are two different types of silk that you need to know about. The first is wild silk and the next is cultivated silk. Silk that is cultivated is called mulberry silk. Wild silk is actually lower quality because the silk worm eats all types of leaves. Mulberry silk comes from silk worms raised in camptivity and fed only mulberry leaves.

3. Don’t confuse silk with satin bedding. This is a very common misconception between the two. Satin sheets actually isn’t a fiber, it’s a special type of way to weave a fabric. So satin sheets are a polyester fabric that is weaved to be shiny. Silk is an unaltered fiber that is all organic.

4. Watch out for blends. This is something some companies do to bring the cost of silk down so people think they are getting silk. They will blend it with different fabrics like cotton or even a satin fabric. This brings down the quality of the fabric drastically.

5. Finally, you want to watch the size. Make sure you know the right size of your mattress because you don’t want to get some silk sheets and not have they fit. One last note, if you don’t have the money to spend on silk sheets but still want something great, bamboo sheets are you ticket.
