Overkill Packaging

It seems about every other day there’s more gadget news. Whether it’s the latest video game console, a cooler way to type and send text messages, or a new music device, electronics are here to stay and are developing at a pace that is almost too much to keep up with.

But for all our high tech genius, we can’t get beyond the overkill of packaging them. The worst offenders are accessory containers. In an effort to cut down on the amount of shoplifting in large retail chains, manufacturers encase small components in over-sized, clear plastic packages molded around the shape of the accessory.

My assumption is that this method has, in fact, cut down on shoplifting. Why? Because when consumers get their packages home they’re unable to get into them!

I can’t count how many times I’ve cut myself on the sharp edges of plastic after sawing through the packaging. There ought to be a law against preventing purchasers from accessing their products once they get home.
