Explaining Sleep Apnea to my Child
Today I sat down and had a very tough conversation with my five-year-old son about how some people are different. It all came from a question they asked me about why all the other kids did not have to wear a sleep apnea mask, which he did.
I explained to him that most children do not have sleep apnea but that there was nothing wrong with him and he was just as normal as all of his friends. I told him that his Bipap helped him to sleep better at night because it would help him to breathe better, but other than that as long as he was awake there was absolutely nothing wrong with him.
I told him the next time I had to go pick up something from the CPAP supply store that he can come with me and he could talk to the pharmacist and find out that there are other children who use these machines as well. I think if he knew that it would make him feel better and feel less different than the rest of his friends.
