Inevitable Disaster with no Deck Sealer

The problem with wood decks is knowing when to put on the deck sealer. The year we built our deck, the summer sun came out with a vengeance, starting Memorial Day, the weekend we built it. The mercury soared to 100 degrees and higher, and didn’t let up until late August. Guess where I spent the summer, given that I was six months pregnant? Yep. Smack  dab in front of ye olde air conditioner.

Because of the extreme temperatures, we didn’t get to apply the sealant to the either the railings or the decking. The best we could do was keep it all clean. By the time the weather was cool enough, the boards were so dried and thirsty from the intensity of the summer sun that we weren’t sure how to proceed.

Finally we decided to buy a stain/seal combination product. My husband loved the color. I thought it looked like dirty diaper brown. After the baby was born, he was forced to agree with me. No woman created that color. It has to be a “guy thing.”
