Better than a Handshake: Well Written Resumes

I have had the opportunity to hire a few people in my lifetime.  It all starts by looking over their resumes and deciding whether or not it would be worth taking the time to interview them.  Sadly, most of their resumes don’t make the cut.

Quite a few of the resumes are rejected because you can tell they were made on a resume builder - they look all the same.  I try to look for some creativity in the resumes - if I wanted to hire a robot, I could just buy one.

But there are a few shining stars that pass through my hands - and these people know how to write a resume.  They typically are on nice paper, not photocopied, with creative content with no attempt to mislead the reader.  For example, if they pumped gas, they would not put "petroleum engineer" on their resume.

I often wonder if the people that know how to make a resume come by it naturally, or if they had a little help.  I try to pry it out of the people at the interview, but the answers are sketchy at best.

Better than a handshake, a well written resume guarantees the applicant a chance at an interview and a job.  It is too bad, no one tells those people with bad resumes what they need to do - it would make my job easier.
